The explosion is said to have been caused by 2,750 metric tons of ammonium nitrate, a highly explosive material, had been stored at the port for the past six years "without preventive measures." The hangar containing these materials were stored was near near Beirut's port and central district, close to many highly-populated areas and tourist sites.
