This piece began as an exploration of text animation, but quickly developed into a letter to my partner, whom I have been physically separated from for 14 months. Through typography, motion and sound, I aimed to express both the frustration and uncertainty of our current situation as we wait for the day when we are able to see each other again. Due to the closed borders that both of our countries are enforcing, neither of us is able to travel to reach the other. I hope that my use of text, in addition to the soundtrack, helps to convey the sense of melancholy that hovers over each passing day, and the lingering uncertainty that we are forced to endure.

I have tried to include small nods to Japan in the video, as this is where my partner is currently situated. The Japanese text that appears is also significant in its meaning. 分かりません, which flickers across the screen early in the piece, means "I don't understand." The word 待つ means "wait." I wanted to include a mixture of English and Japanese text, as this blend of languages represents the infusion of our two cultures, and is also indicative of the way we communicate with each other (we often switch languages mid-sentence, etc).

The ‘Y’ that becomes a plane represents departure and separation. I have used it to depict both the journey that brought me back to Australia initially, as well as the one that I hope to take ‘back home’ soon.
