Authenticator App

Mobile Biometric Security Authentication

This massive software development project occupied the better part of my design life for over two years. An Enterprise-level biometric security authentication application deployed on mobile, tablet, and desktop, I was integral in defining overall artistic direction and visual design, and also assisted in guiding the product into new directions, and markets.

During this project, I also provided other complex Creative Services to the client company, successfully executing a complete company rebranding during my tenure, as well as creating, producing, and delivering multiple marketing campaigns, assets, video, advertising, web and social media assets, and other promotional material production for print and digital distribution.

Scalable, Programmable Icons for Maximum Flexibility on any Screen

From the beginning I approached the icon design from a clean, flat, modern look, and utilized the SVG format for programmability in almost every aspect including dynamic positioning, animation, resizing and colorspace. Using vector tools in both Illustrator, and Sketch, the icons were created with maximum flexibility in mind. Icons can be resized dimensionally while retaining stroke (line thickness) integrity at any scale, and instead of using inflexible raster graphics (jpg, png, etc.), I could design a single icon and recolor it instantly programmatically, and even animate it using engineering resources, rather than having to produce numerous, memory hungry graphic files to achieve similar onscreen effects. The fact is, you simply cannot scale raster graphics up without revealing nasty pixelation. Vector graphics retain their clean lines at almost any size.

“Hand-drawn” look Illustrations for Guided User Tutorials

Initially produced as pen and ink line drawings, then scanned and hand-tooled / optimized using bezier paths using Adobe Illustrator after Adobe Photoshop cleanup.
Detailed Color Style Guide Definitions

I produced detailed color guides, as well as margin guidelines based on common sense visual grids and optical balancing. From the very beginning, I built everything with Vector/SVG knowing that this format would be the most flexible and adaptive graphic technology to use with this project.

Color definitions included opacity values and were also provided in both Light and Dark modes.
An Extensive App-Ready Final Look & Feel Visual Guide and Pixel-Perfect Production Files Designed and Produced in Sketch

As Art Director, I put together initial look and feel with a few screens based on the incredible wireframe workflow of the company's Sr. UI/UX Designer. After final direction was agreed upon, I spent hundreds of hours as Visual Designer building hundreds of different app screens, in multiple responsive layouts for various screen sizes, in both iOS and Android, and Light/Dark color modes. While most production was completed in Sketch, some editing was executed using Illustrator in order to trim production times.
One last thing…

Overall the “Biometric Authenticator” App was a success from a design standpoint, and the engineering team's purview to execute on the concepts, designs, and methodologies we created. Success was attained through the close working relationship between my own work as Art Director/Visual Designer, as well as the Sr. UI/UX Designer, and Engineering Management. As with any project as complex as this, there were many iterations, edits, and product concepts that didn't end up in the final application.

As part of this particular design project, I also created and am cited as the Primary Inventor for a Multi-Dimensional (3D+4D) Visual Authentication method/process Patent (Secure 2F/MF Authentication using Multiple OTKs and Graphical Glyphs) which was initially filed on June 12, 2019. It was an excellent experience and the client company continues to innovate and move this software forward.
