Architectural Type Studies: Light + Shadow

Architectural Type Studies: Light + Shadow
A series of letterform explorations inspired by the transitions from light to shadow in interior and exterior architectural spaces. All photos taken during my time in Basel, Switzerland.

While I visited Basel, Switzerland, I began photographing buildings, public spaces, and architectural moments of light and shadow as I walked through the city. These photographs served as memories of these buildings but also as a canvas for exploring forms.

After returning from Switzerland, I began studying at the Maryland Institute College of Art in the Graduate Graphic Design Program. Having collected many photographs, I started to crop them into interesting moments that became almost typographic. Reducing the photos into single elements and focusing on formal qualities within the architecture manifested in transitions of light to dark. As part of my thesis, Typescapes, I explored how these transitions from light to shadow could be used to draw the interior and exterior spaces of letterforms.
