The ethnographic collection is inspired by old stories and legends about sleep demons/spirts. In Estonia, we call them Luupainaja (Bone Presser)
These spirits come to you when not satisfied with your inner self.
They sense the weakness of your spirit and will come to you at night when you fall asleep. When it takes you over at night, you will be left with symtoms of paralysis.
In a way you are awake but not able to move or shout. As if the demon will be sitting on your chest to block your breath. The feeling keeps on returning, again and again, every night. It will come to you, again and again,
every night until you are out of your breath.
How we protect ourselves from Luupainaja?
When a baby is born, we collect his/her first tooth and first lock of hair.
We place it in a small treasure box and keep it there all their life.
Because inside our hair are written down all our memories and first hair remembers your first emotions. These are the cleanest and the brightest memories we have.
Teeth are what protect us from evil spirits and when the first tooth comes out,
we collect it and hide so it will always keep us safe and no one could put spell on us.
In a way everyone has their demons inside, It can be evedinced on your brain picture but especcially it is heard in its electrical impulses, that communicate demons voice.
The collection is made from: linen fibre- it looks like and symbolizes human hair. Embroidered with 230 porcelain hand crafted teeth.
The form of the garment is inspired by the psychological Rorschach test and brain MRT picture.
