“In every century, the way that artistic forms are structured reflects the way in which science or contemporary culture views reality.” - Umberto Eco, Open Works

¿What is art nowadays? Within an everchanging society, the dynamics of art culture should not fall behind this trend. Nonetheless, pausing our minds and wandering our surroundings are the qualities that art supplies to our frantic yet sedentary lifestyle. Turin is the incubator by excellence of a variety of artistic expressions since its monarchic era to our current times, thus, we understand Villa Altissimo as a micro incubator that brings artists and art enthusiasts closer to the city’s cultured landscape.

A walkway threads the contained spaces (the pre-existing) with the container spaces (the intervention), to generate the 3 different ambiances of the place. The low section defines the visitors private zone; the co-habitation typology between artists and guests conceives a flexible accommodation between them, where an intimate and encountering atmosphere prevails to foster idea exchange during the residence stay.

The welcoming piazza hosts the communal ambiance; the historic buildings house the workshops and the restaurant-gallery to involve the public with the art experimentation, while the additional porticoed volume holds a hidden wellness area and the stage for showcasing art spectacles.

On the upper part of the forest we see the pods appear; these sculptural dwellings are shared with guests and visitors as artistic expression cabins and also as a natural retreat for introspection.

Inhabiting the heritage is the Villa’s central experience and the feeling of refuge is the quality that inspires this hotel typology, where relaxing getaway and artistic production come together. This concept seeks that the Villa enables the appropriation of the new ways of creating and dwelling the art thanks to the container’s ability to reinvent itself in time.
