Regional Flags
The corporate staff of Golfsmith International (Golfsmith in the U.S., Golf Town in Canada) divide themselves up into regions, and exhibit a lot of regional pride. While I was working in the creative marketing department at Golfsmith HQ, I had the opportunity to design flags for a few of the regions. Each region submitted a laundry list of items they wanted to have included on the flag (see The Big East, below), or rough ideas for a concept, and I took it from there. (The Pacific Stampede, for example, suggested a surfing cowboy; I felt that horses better represented stampeding, and threw in a reference to Katsushika Hokusai's "Great Wave" woodblock print. In the end, as with most design projects, the final product represented a sort of compromise: the cowboy indeed came back, and some of the Hokusai details were toned down, but my contribution of a horse-wave [or is it a wave-horse?] remained a key design element.) I designed and constructed all the elements on the flag artwork below.
