Square One is a North American Overwatch team competing in Overwatch Contenders. I was brought on in July 2020 to work on the social media graphics coverage. This is all my work for them from July until the end of 2020 when they ceased operations.
I joined the team with less than a week before they were set to compete in Contenders Trials for the July tournament. These were a very last minute idea but came together well enough to run with until I could invest time into something new and unique.
Characters had the 8 pink squares from the team's logo uniquely overlayed on them.
While trying to plan out a new style for August I knew I wanted to try and break the standard and come up with something unique. I personally enjoy using some aspect of the opposing team in the match graphics, even if it's as simple as using their primary colour for their team name.
I decided to go one step further and feature a hero of the opposing team in the graphic to create a stand off between both teams.
The end result is a style that creates an intimidating scene and builds hype between the match showing both sides against each other while bringing a unique style to the Overwatch scene.
Not all results shown in graphics may be accurate.
Initial gameday posts typically feature hero poses that show aggression or confidence while results posts try to have heroes looking more relaxed and fun.
With the end of the Contenders season I wanted to close out the style by doing a fun, illustrated version of the graphics.
All illustrations were made by Zebraffe.
Gauntlet was the final tournament of the year and a chance for a full overhaul. The goal was to use a minimalistic style that made the heroes the attention grabber, while still showing off all information effectively.
After Gauntlet, Square One would eventually halt operations and end their competition in Overwatch after two years. This team was my entry into semi-professional Overwatch and I loved being a part of the ride.
