Retrospective08:
Senior BFA Catalog
Client: the school of art & design at alfred university
working in conjunction with the afred chapter of AIGA, i produced a book containing the work of 85 seniors graduating with a BFA from the school of art and design at alfred university. i was responsible for the layout and design of the interior and the cover was a collaboration between myself and alida masuck. 174 pages, full color, perfect bound, 9"x7", printed on lulu.com.

the cohen center for the arts at alfred university serves as a nexus for student/alumni partnerships. its central focus is an e-commerce website where alumni and faculty can market themselves and sell their artwork to the public. documentation of official presentation material to the university is shown here. plans conceived included a standards manual, web page mockups, print samples (letterhead, business card, direct mail) and signage systems.

as erik spiekermann says, “i am a typomaniac.” i would have to personally agree wholeheartedly with this statement. as a sophomore at alfred university, i was required to take a 3d studio. coming from a 2d background, i wanted to find a way to mesh my love for design with the 3 dimensional medium of glass. all letters were loose sand casted, cut, ground and polished to a cerium finish.

.dotcom monoprints 2
Client: part of senior thesis project
26'' x 39'' monoprint that depicts words and phrases I used in a conversation online.
The first layer of paper is UV Ultra cover translucent paper printed upon with hand-cut type stencils and then cut into. Behind that are 2 more layers of paper. The bottom layer is a giclee print on UV Ultra cover of javascript taken from the source code of a random web page I came across.

as a designer, i realize the importance of taking a step back from the computer and working things out by hand every so often. with this series of prints i wanted to use typography to create an image rather than making a seperation between text and image. this series was printed dry on plexiglass using lithograph inks and handcut helvetica bold stencils on various sheets of 18¨x24¨ canson paper. exhibited at a student show at my school, these prints were chosen to be displayed at a student exhibition at typecon 2008 in buffalo.

Undertow Show Poster
Client: Fosdick-Nelson Gallery
proposed show poster for undertow, an exhibit of art from up and coming sculpture artists ben fain, hope hilton, and andrew scott ross. all the work in the show has a moody, forboding undertone and i decided to use that theme for my poster. i focused on the work of andrew scott ross and created a landscape similar to that of his sculpture work. working with distressed type and bold graphic black and white images, i attempted to compose an eerie landscape with a mysterious feeling without actually giving away what the work in the show looks like.

Earth Cloud Show Poster
Client: Fosdick-Nelson Gallery
show poster advertising earthcloud, a show containing the work of world-renowned ceramic artist and alfred faculty member wayne higby. his conceptual ceramic work for earthcloud surrounds the idea of earthly matter transcending the spacial airiness that it conveys to the viewer. so with my concept i wanted to keep in mind the lightness his work expresses while still speaking to its stable earthly qualities.

Write Brain Creative Learning System
Client: branding and corporate identity class
the write brain creative learning system was a brand that i developed from the ground up. write brain was a company that supported a more creative learning style for grade school aged children. by combining logical and rational brain activities with the creative expressive aspects of learning, write brain’s activity books are able to offer children a more “whole brained” learning experience. along with designing and producing activity books, i also created a logo, comprehensive design identity standards manual, letterheads, envelopes, business cards, brochures, and a series of poster advertisements.

Text & Images By
Client: the school of art & design at alfred university
i was hired by the school of art and design at alfred university to create a catalog of student work from the "text and image book form" class, a class where students are encouraged to combine design and printmaking and explore the possibilities. 300 pages, perfect bound, full color. printed on lulu.com

spam (3598) | hardcover, screwpost bound | 16” x 6” x 1” each To me, spam is a fascinating everyday annoyance. It is really humorous encountering the new ways spammers come up with spelling and phrasing certain questionable content to bypass spam blockers. In the process of compiling information for this book, it was really quite interesting to see how spam varied from inbox to inbox based on sex and age. When thinking of how to conceptually represent spam for the covers of my books. I came across this shag carpeted pillow at a thrift store, and I knew right away what I was going to use it for. The fakeness of the smiling sunshine and rainbow was exactly what I needed to portray the idealism and false advertising that spam represents in a nutshell.

Meditea Logo and Package Design
Client: meditea llc, los angeles
shown above are my logo and packaging concepts for the meditea herbal tea company. they wanted a new refreshing image with a simple and clean design. for the logo i chose to simplify the lotus yoga postion and also allude to tea leaves. for the packaging art i was inspired by ancient japanese paintings. i chose to do a vector illustration of a japanese mountain pass. shown to the right is a 3d rendering of what the packaging of the tea tin will look like when produced.

Hand-cut Mini Book Project
Client: self initiated bookmaking
images above are documentation of a bookmaking project combining both traditional and digital printmaking processes. each signature is made of neutral kraft toned paper hand sewn to the next. tip-in’s with photopolymer prints and hand cut type are then layered throughout creating hidden intricacies behind every fold. 4"x4"x1"

pervert | hardcover, screwpost bound | 16” x 6” x 1” pervert was my typographic exploration of secret sexual perversions that were admitted to on the Internet. Using UV Ultra cover weight paper and both traditional and digital printmaking processes, layers of secrets were exposed through the translucency of the paper I chose to use and the intricate negative space i cut away selectively. With this project I wanted to communicate the urgency and depth contained within these admissions, as well as the beautiful typographic potential they possess.

:) + :(: Artist book about the use of emoticons
Client: part of senior thesis project
:) + :( | sewn signatures, hardcover bound with exposed spines
The reduction of emotions to punctuation almost seems silly, but then again I seem too make smiley faces out of a colon and a parenthesis all the time when chatting online without a second thought. In this digital age, human contact and emotions are reduced to emails and emoticons. With :) + :(, I chose to create compositions throughout the spreads by using emoticons and punctuation. Each book also contains the emotions contained within the emoticons spelled out in single words on blank pages.

omg wtf? | hardcover, perfect bound | 4” x 4” x 1.5” each The digitalization of language has become more prevalent in this day and age due to text messaging and instant messaging. It becomes necessary to abbreviate and shorten words to send and receive messages at lightening speed. omg wtf? is a typographic exploration of acronyms and pattern. By repitition of abbreviations, I created a full page pattern of type from which i dissected positive and negative space from to reveal the paper color and printing from the page beneath.

Altered Book Project
Client: self initiated bookmaking
i created this book with the intention of emphasizing reuse and taking the old and making it new again. each of the four mini books mounted on the plexiglass squares was once a dirty old paperback laying unused on a thrift store shelf. i took each of the books and cut them on a guillotine cutter and then began dissecting their insides. i tipped in pieces of handcut helvetica i had used for the monoprint series and images from the insides of the books. each book is an explosion of narrative and image meant to be viewed from all sides, hence being sewn onto plexiglass.
