ACOG Holds Black Maternal Health Week 2020

An experienced doctor, Shawanda Renee Obey, MD, is an independent OB hospitalist who also serves as a supervising physician at the Northeast Valley Health Corporation, which she joined in 2018. In addition, Shawanda Renee Obey, MD, is involved with several professional organizations, including the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG).

In partnership with the Black Mamas Matter Alliance, ACOG recently held Black Maternal Health Week 2020, which advocates for the elimination of racial prejudice and bias in maternal care. Taking place from April 13-17, the event’s theme was ‘Centering Black Mamas’ and included educational sessions made available on social media and other online sources.

ACOG also noted that, to remove racial prejudice and improve health outcomes for black women, the ways that health care professionals may perpetuate inequality must be addressed, topics that were discussed during Black Maternal Health Week 2020.

In addition, ACOG has released several resources on the racial disparities in maternal health, such as maternal mortality prevention, which can be found on its website.
