An unprecedented 65.6 million people around the world have been forced from their homes. 22.5 million of them are refugees. Some of them live in temporary refugee camps where the conditions are hard. The floors and surroundings are muddy and dirty, and several families live in the same tent.
In the beginning of 2016, during our first year as packaging design students, we got the opportunity to work with a material called Re-board. Re-board is a thick and strong material. It is similar to corrugated board, but much stronger. In fact, it's almost as strong as wood. It is often used to build stands for fairs, due to the lightness of the material. It can be transported flat and easily put together on the spot. Due to those qualities the brief was to create something that makes life easier for those who live in refugee camps.
Children are born and raised in these camps. We wanted to create something that got their mind of the situation, if only for a moment. Our solution to the brief was therefor to created a ping pong table for children at school. The boxes for storage is supposed to keep the personal belongings from getting muddy but also to be turned upside down and used as stools during class since the ping pong table also can be used as a desk.
Everything is built to optimize the transport. All parts would be sent flat
and a step by step manual of how to build the table would follow.
