922 LHD - underground mining vehicle

I spent a few years as a technical illustrator documenting the manuals for underground mining machines referred to as LHDs (acronym for Load-Haul-Dump). Later I worked as a mechanical designer on this particular machine (above). I was responsible for the operator compartment. The challenge was to position the driver over-center and provide appropriate controls so as to not inhibit an emergency exit.
My solution was to use only joystick controls.

I originally did this on the board and working with the Prototype Shop, produced a physical full scale mockup of the operator compartment.
Later, while working as a product designer for Autodesk, I recreated the project from memory as a way to test Inventor's modeling, rendering, and documentation capabilities.

The following is the product brochure for this particular machine. The driver was the prototype technician I worked with to create the plywood mockup.
