Macular degeneration is an eye disease that mostly affects people over 50, causing blurred and reduced central vision in one or both eyes. The condition occurs when the macular, the part of the retina for clear vision, is damaged. There are two main types of this eye disease: dry and wet macular degeneration. Of the two, dry macular is the most common, occurring in 85-90% of people who develop it.

Persons with dry macular degeneration experience minimal blurriness and reduced central vision, which can make it difficult for them to read, drive, and recognize people. If left untreated, dry macular degeneration can cause wet macular degeneration, which is more serious. A person with wet macular disorder can lose central vision and they may see objects as extremely wavy or distorted. About 1 in 10 people with dry macular degeneration develop wet macular degeneration.

The cause of this eye disorder is unknown, but factors such as age, smoking, poor diet, lack of exercise, family genes, excessive sunlight exposure, heart disease, and gender, women have a higher risk, can increase to the possibility of macular degeneration. Both dry and wet macular degeneration have no treatment, but clinical trials of treatment through stem cell therapies are promising.
