The Problem
Covid-19 has caused people across the United States have been experiencing food insecurity, financial instability, as well as health concerns. The economy has also taken a hit due to the pandemic, especially in the restaurant industry, causing many restaurants to adjust their practices to adhere to safety guidelines. These changes include online ordering, take out only options, as well as contactless delivery to keep businesses afloat. These adjustments not only have been increasing environmental waste, but they also provide the customer with a poor dining experience.

Due to the pandemic, many families have lost their jobs and are experiencing financial insecurity. Quality of life has gone down and depression rates have gone up. In response to these effects Covid-19 has brought, our goal was to reimagine the dining out experience that not only keeps the customers and staff safe but allows customers to give back to those in their community to those who are facing the struggles caused by Covid-19.

Soul Plates- Our Solution

As the world continues to evolve while dealing with the effects of Covid-19, restaurants have begun to reimagine the dining experience in a post-Covid-19 environment. Soul Plates, was created in response to the changes Covid-19 has caused for the restaurant industry as a way to give consumers the dining out experience safely and mindfully. Soul Plates is a for-profit venture partnered with the non-profit organization Philabundance to provide a venture that builds community relief through buying meals.

As a group we decided on certain principles that we wanted our restaurant to uphold. We wanted to provide a trustable platform for giving food as well as buying meals for others and donation. Additionally we wanted our branding to provide a sense of relief and ideas of community. We also wanted our UX design to provide users with the easiest and pleasant experience from getting food to being able to buy smiles.

Logo Process
I was looking for typography and hand-drawn styles that matched a hatch print aesthetic that I was striving for. I referenced Mary Kate Mccdevitt’s work to get a general idea in terms of how I wanted to approach the logo. Especially with how she created illustrative text. For my logo, I believed that the text should be the centerpiece and portrayed it similar to Mary Kate Mccdevitt’s work. Illustrating the font helped create a homey vibe with hand drawn type. Furthermore, I was looking for hatch print fonts that conveyed a country aesthetic to match the theme i was trying to convey on my logo. I was also fond of a similar color scheme that had tan and orange, because I believe that it would compliment the vibe of my logo the best.

My logo process went all over the place. I created variations of many different concepts and ideas based off the magnitude of cause and name of our venture could be presented in many different ways. Early on I was trying to demonstrate the idea of how an individual can give what they get. I tried many different variations ranging from spoons going to either side to a care package concept. I ultimately landed on a simplistic concept that specifically used hand down style and type to evoke the feeling of the venture rather than the concept of giving what you get. I went through many different variations and styles of the logo before I landed on a type that I was fond of that portrayed the right level of southern country style followed by homeliness. I went through various considerations of different type combinations and color schemes before arriving at the right combination of typography on the logo with the right colors.
