Portrait photography has always been a passion of mine. I enjoy interacting with my subjects and getting them to become comfortable in front of the camera. I also love using colors in most of my work because I feel like that is my way of including personality into an image. Color is a powerful communication tool that can dramatically affect moods, feelings and emotions. Although perceptions of color are fairly subjective, there are some color effects that hold universal meaning according to color psychology. Colors in the red area of the color spectrum are known as warm colors and include red, orange and yellow. These warm colors evoke emotions ranging from feelings of warmth and comfort to feelings of anger and hostility. Colors on the blue side of the spectrum are known as cool colors and include blue, purple and green. These colors are often described as calm, but can also call to mind feelings of sadness or indifference. For my final project, I wanted to show the relationship between color and emotions while including my own photographic aesthetic. In my photo series entitled “Emotionz”, I shot 11 headshots of different people evoking facial expressions they were comfortable with. Then in postproduction using Lightroom and Photoshop, I used bright-saturated colors to intensify the feeling. The different emotions include anger, confusion, mischief, joy, anticipation, surprise, disgust, sadness, contemplation, admiration, and nonchalance. For prints I used the Digital RA-4, and used the square ratio aspect of 12 by 12 inches. Overall, I really enjoyed this project not only because I got to shoot within my personal comfort zone but I was able to experiment and try something new with it as well.
