Applying Cinemagraph in Fashion Illustration can enhance and extend the potential development of Fashion Illustration into a new form.

 

This is my MA Final Project which I need to come out with a hypothesis and test on it. In this project, I apply the principles of cinemagraph into Fashion Illustration. During my research, I found one similarity between Cinemagraph and Fashion Illustration - capturing the precious moment. In this case, Cinemagraph can be a good tool to enhance Fashion Illustration by adding subtle movement that capture the viewer's attention and create a more effective visual communication. Besides, by adding motion into illustration, it creates a contrast between still image and moving image. The motion leads the viewer's eye pathway to the entire illustration.

 

During the experiment, I choose photo illustration as the style of the illustration. This is because I would like to maintain one principle of Cimemagraph - high quality imagery (photography). Then, I added illustration to exaggerate the fashion figure in order to deliver the concept and the mood of the fashion collection. In this project, I found out that observation skill and the study on motion is important to create "illustrated" Cinemagraph. This is because I need to be clear of every single movement for example the process of blinking an eye. If I am a photographer or videographer, it is easier for me to capture the movement by using camera or video cam. But, if I am an illustrator, I will need to create every steps by myself based on my knowledge and daily observation. In this project, every single movement in the outcome is well planned and illustrated.

 

Below are the outcome of testing on the hypothesis, from Fashion Photography to Fashion Illustration to the new "Fashion Illustragraph". I wouldn't call this Cinemagraph because it is not plainly photography which portray something in real life. So, will "Fashion Illustragraph" might be the next in Fashion Illustration(?)

Concept:
These set of "Fashion Illustragraph" is portray the worries of women before their wedding. A wedding or a marriage symbolized the end of single life. At the same time, it symbolizes that the woman is getting into a new stage of her life. These illustrations show her worries, wondering whether she made the right decision and how she view herself in the mirror - the mirror reflects the truth.

 

"Fashion Illustragraph" can be applied on websites for promotional and advertising purpose. It is a new form of fashion illustration that can be used during fashion show, events or exhibition as background setting or promotional purpose. It can also be used as a display on digital frame. Fashion Illustration always make use of the best available technology (from traditional drawing method to digital drawing method, from print to digital display). I believe that fashion illustration will continue developing into different form and for different purposes.
