Obstetrician and gynecologist Dr. Maureen Muoneke serves the Georgia Division of Aging Services (DAS) as a medical consultant. Additionally, Dr. Maureen Muoneke is a Fellow of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG).
On its website, ACOG recommends physical activity for healthy pregnant women. After a pregnant woman receives permission from her obstetrician, she can engage in exercises such as:
- brisk walking, to improve joints and muscles;
- swimming, to support her increased weight and protect her body from injuries and muscle strains;
- stationary cycling, to improve balance and protect her from falls; and
- modified Pilates or modified yoga, to improve flexibility and reduce stress.
Additionally, ACOG recommends drinking a sufficient amount of water before, during, and after a workout to prevent dehydration, especially during the first trimester. Pregnant women are also advised to wear a sports bra; wear loose clothing; exercise in a temperature-controlled, well-ventilated room; and avoid lying flat on the back to prevent the uterus from pressing on a large vein that returns blood to the heart.
