BREAD

The Old English word for bread was hlaf (hlaifs in Gothic: modern English loaf)

The first agricultural culture developed in the Middle East in the so-called Fertile Crescent; and bread grain became her vital staple food. Bread was a high priority for the early sedentary societies. Christianity is one of its most important symbols. Bread stands for the divine gift, for generosity, willingness to share. Acts and phrases of everyday life are reminiscent of the sacred character of the bread.
